Case Study: Denefield School

Denefield School was awarded a Small Grant of £384 to provide free yoga classes, on a weekly basis, to vulnerable teenage girls (aged 14-16) who otherwise don’t do any exercise.  Alongside helping students improve their core stability and flexibility, the clases aimed to boost concentration and confidence levels, reduce levels of anxiety and depression and provide participants with a better understanding of self-love and compassion.

The grant was used to pay for yoga mats and blocks for the students to safely practice yoga and the school agreed to provide the space for the class. We particularly liked that this application was driven by one of the teachers who identified the need, researched the potential benefits and volunteered to deliver the class.

When applying to the fund, the applicant explained that the makeup of the group who will be attending the class is such that their families don’t have the money to purchase yoga mats nor pay for class fees locally.  They explained how they had identified these as barriers to participation and how they adapted the project to address this.
