What is it?

Nordic Walking is a fun and social activity that can be done in town or country throughout the year. Using specially designed poles to enhance your natural walking experience Nordic Walking adapts a technique that is similar to the upper body action of classic cross country skiing. It is a whole body exercise that can be enjoyed at many levels, from walking for health to athletic Nordic running.  More than 10 million people globally enjoy this outdoor activity all year round

Why is it good for me?

The Nordic Walking poles give your whole upper body a workout while helping you to walk faster for longer. It’s really good exercise for problem areas such as the arms, stomach and bottom. It’s a great way to strengthen core muscles, improve posture and lose weight. You actually burn 46% more calories than regular walking when you Nordic walk.

Being outdoors is a great way to get fit and active, you’ll meet new people, have the chance to chat and enjoy some green space.

How much does it cost?

From around £5 an hour you can enjoy a typical Nordic walking class, nearly always the poles are provided within this price. Some areas have free taster sessions or classes so you can give it a go.

What equipment do I need?

• Comfortable outdoor clothing.
• Trainers are fine if its dry weather or a walking shoe if it’s wet.
• Layers are a great idea and if it’s raining you will want waterproofs.
• Most instructors will provide Nordic walking poles for you to use in class. If you want to get your own poles they start from around £60 a pair.
