What is it?
Yoga and Pilates are types of holistic group fitness classes aimed at improving full body strength, flexibility, balance, posture and co-ordination. Yoga and Pilates also have great mental health benefits, providing an opportunity to relax, reflect and escape everyday stresses.
Pilates specifically aims to increase full body strength, with particular emphasis on working your core muscles. The most common Pilates classes are done on a mat or using other specialised equipment – also known as Reformer classes.
Yoga specifically is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. The main components of yoga are poses, breathing and meditation. Yoga is also a mat based class and some sessions may incorporate other equipment, such as foam blocks, that enable you to further tailor the workout for you.

How much does it cost?
Prices range from anything from £6 to £25 per session depending on the location, equipment used, specialism and capacity of the class. Many Pilates and yoga instructors also offer private sessions which typically range from £40 to £70.
Pilates and yoga are usually provided, and best enjoyed, as a course of sessions. Many instructors and studios offer packages and membership discounts which make regular attendance more cost effective.
What equipment do I need?
Equipment is usually provided by the studio or instructor. However, yoga and Pilates mats are widely available and are fairly affordable if you wish to purchase your own.
Ensure you wear comfortable clothing to your session and bring a bottle of water. You may also wish to bring a towel with you for additional support whilst performing some exercises.
