Melanin Skate Gals & Pals is an initiative by Skate Gals & Pals using sport as a tool for development, social innovation and empowerment, we encourage adults from marginalised communities to be more active and make use of their local environment, whilst connecting to a global prominent skate community.

Why was Melanin Skate Gals & Pals created?

The skateboarding community for many years has been a very white male dominated scene and we wanted to change this by catering for the needs of those who are often excluded from sport activities such as marginalised genders, the LGBTQIA+ community and Black and other People Of Colour.

How did you know what people wanted?

We created a safe space environment, where our beneficiaries can take part in physical activities and community building away from harassment, discrimination, marginalisation, racism, sexism and queer and transphobia. We knew this is what people wanted especially from our own shared experiences.

How did you promote your activities?

We provided a variety of activities catered to the needs of our communities: Weekly skate meet-up sessions, creative and holistic workshops and skate trips away for BPOC adults. All of which were promoted through our social media.

"I went to a MSGP meet-up in my first week of skating and so it’s got a special place in my heart because I think it gave me a chance to see how diverse and encouraging the skate community is! A lot of my skate friendships have formed through MSGP so I’m really thankful!"

How did you overcome barriers?

We’ve seen a huge change in who uses the skatepark, with now more LGBTQIA+ and BPOC skaters going there to skate.

We’re able to work with UCL and provide sessions for their international students which was a bridge that we wanted to bridge between locals, new residents and students.

We have since continued to break the barriers of the consistent white male dominated community and created space for more women and more BPOC women especially.

What are your plans moving forward?

Our projects have contributed to changing perceptions of skateboarding within the community. Skateboarding is now viewed as a positive and constructive activity that nurtures personal growth and well-being.

The shift in perception has led to increased support and acceptance from parents, local authorities, and the community at large. We plan to expand MSGP further, even outside of the UK to more areas of the world where it's even less accessible and build our community together.

Top Tip from Melanin Skate Gals & Pals:

For us, skateboarding often transcends language and cultural barriers, providing a platform for cultural exchange and learning.

As children and adults from different backgrounds interact and share experiences, they gain a broader perspective and appreciation for diversity, enriching the communities cultural fabric.

If it brings people together in a world that so often excludes minorities, then it's important you do it! There will always be people who need community.

How does Melanin Skate Gals & Pals embody the action area 'Social'?

Melanin Skate Gals & Pals has created a communal gathering space where children/adults from diverse backgrounds come together and socialise through skateboarding/skating.

By offering structured coached skate sessions, the project empowers people with a positive and engaging activity. Skateboarding is not just a physical activity; it's a form of self-expression.

Our project's encourage children/adults to explore their creativity and personal style through skateboarding. So many of our sessions have become a hub for social interaction, fostering friendships and connections that transcend cultural, economic, and social barriers.
