Evolving passed its leg warmer-and-leotard clad origins, aerobics is a dance-based fitness class, led by an instructor, that first became wildly popular thanks to a Jane Fonda video in the early eighties.

Aerobic endurance makes the lungs work harder by increasing the body’s need for oxygen. As this oxygen is transported through your arteries, the heart’s muscles are exercised as it works to deliver the extra oxygen into the blood. This cardiovascular exercise improves the function of your heart, but in a fun way.

Today there are as many styles as there are types of music. It can be done using a step, in the water, and you can even do it competitively.

Why is it good for me?

Aerobics is an effective way of keeping fit. Some of the core benefits are as follows:

  • Improved heart and lung function
  • Increased stamina and energy
  • Reduced tension, anxiety and depression, and better sleep patterns

How much does it cost?

Aerobics sessions cost between £5 and £8 per class.

Buying a course of aerobic exercise classes can reduce the cost per class even further.

What equipment do I need?

All you need for aerobics is clothing you can exercise comfortably in, such as:

  • T-shirt
  • Shorts
  • Comfortable footwear
  • Hand towel – you’re going to get sweaty!
