Let's Lift The Curfew

Our Let’s Lift the Curfew campaign has been running since October 2023, showcasing women’s stories and concerns around getting active outdoors in the darker months.

Alongside this, the campaign calls on wider society to acknowledge its role in making getting active outdoors safer for women.

This year, the campaign is back for a third year, marking the official end of summertime with events happening across the country.

What events are happening?

Groups across the UK are holding Let’s Lift the Curfew activities to support the campaign, amplifying women’s voices to make outdoor sport and physical activity safer and more inclusive for women.

Join the conversation by putting on your own activity or joining one of our supporters runs across the UK. Good Gym and England Athletics are hosting runs during the week beginning 27 October, that anyone can attend.

How can you support Let's Lift The Curfew?

We're continuing to raise wider cultural awareness of women’s safety issues and fears when getting active.

You can have a conversation with women and girls to understand their experience or put on your own local Let’s Lift the Curfew event to show support within your community.

Some ideas of things you might like to consider:

Activities

  • Is there a regular activity that is already hosted in your area that could be turned into a Let's Lift The Curfew event this winter? This could be a cycle, walk or other activity.

Community engagement

  • Who are the women in your wider networks who you could invite to join your activity?
  • Which communities live in your area who Let's Lift The Curfew would resonate with?

Using Strava

  • We’re asking you to log a walk, run or cycle on Strava – at a time you feel safe doing so – and label it 'Let’s Lift The Curfew'.
  • You can share your Strava activity to your social media with the hashtag #LetsLiftTheCurfew and tag This Girl Can, explaining that these activities are to draw attention to the safety concerns preventing women getting active during darker months. If you’re sharing it to your Instagram Story, you can search for the 'Let’s Lift The Curfew' sticker in-app and add that too.

Social media

  • We've produced some social media assets for you to use, organised by the different programmes used to generate each asset (Canva, PowerPoint and Photoshop), with instructions for each.
  • Assets for approved This Girl Can supporters, which include the TGC logo, can be found here, while there are logo-free assets to help anyone promote their activity below.

Guides

  • England Athletics have produced a guide to running in the dark for individual runners and leaders that we would recommend reading through to consider ways to keep safe during your event.
  • GoodGym have put together a training guide on male allyship to help improve women’s safety at night, which may be helpful to share with male runners joining your run.
