Let's Lift The Curfew

Let’s Lift The Curfew launched in October 2023, to showcase women’s stories and concerns around getting active outdoors in the darker months. Alongside this, it called on wider society to acknowledge their role in making getting active outdoors safer for women.

This year, the campaign is back with a flagship event in Manchester, kickstarting hundreds of local runs across the country.

What events are happening?

We hosted our flagship run in partnership with GM Moving in Manchester, on the evening of Monday 28 October. The run coincided with the clocks going back and the return of fewer daylight hours, drawing attention to the need for women’s safety when exercising in the winter months.

We also worked with supporters to host additional runs across the UK, to drive awareness on a national scale. Good Gym and England AthleticsRun Together programme supported the campaign by hosting more than 100 runs during the week beginning 28 October, that anyone could attend.

How can you support Let's Lift The Curfew?

We would like to invite you to put on your own local Let’s Lift The Curfew run, to keep raising awareness of the campaign with your community.

Some ideas of things you might like to consider:

  • Is there a regular evening run that is already hosted in your area that could be turned into a Let's Lift The Curfew event this winter? This could also be a cycle, walk or other activity.
  • Who are the women in your wider networks who you could invite to join your run? Which communities live in your area who Let's Lift The Curfew would resonate with?
  • We’re asking you to log a walk, run or cycle on Strava – at a time you feel safe doing so – and label it 'Let’s Lift The Curfew'.
    • You can share your Strava activity to your social media with the hashtag #LetsLiftTheCurfew and tag This Girl Can, explaining that these runs are to draw attention to the safety concerns preventing women getting active during darker months. If you’re sharing it to your Instagram Story, you can search for the 'Let’s Lift The Curfew' sticker in-app and add that too.
  • We've produced some social media assets for you to use, organised by the different programmes used to generate each asset (Canva, PowerPoint and Photoshop), with instructions for each – assets for approved This Girl Can supporters, which include the TGC logo, can be found here, while there are logo-free assets to help anyone promote their run below.
  • England Athletics have produced a guide to running in the dark for individual runners and leaders that we would recommend reading through to consider ways to keep safe during your event.
  • GoodGym have put together a training guide on male allyship to help improve women’s safety at night, which may be helpful to share with male runners joining your run.

To help you promote your event we've put together some social media assets for you to use - these are split up into the different programmes used to generate each asset, with instructions for each.
