After my divorce I needed to find myself again, and I found myself when I was surrounded by nature, in the mountains climbing.

Growing up I suffered from low self-esteem and had confidence issues, a lot were related to the way I looked. This stopped me from many things. As I got older, I started to build up courage in myself and get out of my comfort zone. Only after the traumas in my life I was able to really come out of my comfort zone and become more confident, this enabled me to try new sports and activities. Wearing the niqab can be a barrier for many women myself, including as you may feel you are not fitting in with what society thinks you should look like in a certain sport, also if you don’t see many people who look like you it can be daunting trying new things. I wanted to change this, so I started trying all activities which had helped me become more confident and had helped others too. I don’t see my niqab as a barrier; it empowers me to do more.

I have always been an adventurer and an active person. My mother was very encouraging and supported me in everything I have done. She got me outdoors with hiking, cycling and swimming.

After my divorce I needed to find myself again, and I found myself when I was surrounded by nature, in the mountains climbing.

This motivated me to try new outdoor activities. I started hiking then went into climbing, wild swimming, paddle boarding and kayaking. I had so much passion for the outdoors that I wanted to share it with other women like me, so I founded the wanderlust women a year ago. The group has motivated and helped so many Muslim women get outdoors.

I always make a plan; plans are good to keep you Motivated for the day to ensure you fit it all. I like to wind down in the evenings so I would usually go for a swim, run or hike. On my days off I plan big adventure days which would be a climb or a mountain hike.

I used to go to the gym 3 times a week, but due to my change in job role and working outdoors, the outdoors is my place where I keep fit.

Sometimes I like to go for a walk or run and catch the sunrise before work. I’m generally a very active person so as soon as I have a bit of time, I will always get my shoes on and go for a hike or run.
